Abstract

AI assistance provides significant productivity gains, especially for novice workers. However, this study investigates how such assistance affects skill development. Through randomized experiments, it was found that relying on AI impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, often without significant efficiency gains. The research identifies six distinct AI interaction patterns, three of which involve cognitive engagement and successfully preserve learning outcomes, suggesting that careful AI integration is crucial for skill formation.
